UF freshmen end up in one of several residential areas across the Gainesville campus. The traditional halls (Broward, Jennings, Tolbert, Yulee, Reid) are clustered in the central freshman residential area. Beaty Towers is the iconic high-rise. Hume Hall and Cypress Hall are newer with apartment-style features. Springs Complex offers suite-style options.
Where you land affects everything from your bed setup to how long your walk is to the dining hall.
UF Housing furnishes residence hall rooms with:
Bed frames in most UF halls are adjustable, allowing for standard height, raised, or full loft configurations.
UF does not provide pillows, sheets, or any soft goods. You bring all of that.
Broward Hall. Large freshman hall on the main residential side of campus. Twin XL beds, community bathrooms shared on each floor.
Jennings Hall. Mid-sized freshman hall. Twin XL beds, community bathrooms.
Tolbert, Yulee, Reid, Mallory. Freshman halls in the Tolbert area. Mostly traditional layout with community bathrooms. Twin XL beds.
Beaty Towers. The two towers (East and West). Suite-style with private bathrooms shared between two rooms. Twin XL beds. The high-rise experience.

Standard dorm checklist plus:
Twin XL bedding. Sheets, mattress topper, comforter all Twin XL.
A strong fan. Gainesville in August is hot and humid. A floor fan that actually moves air, not just a desk fan.
A humidity solution. Cheap moisture absorber packs for the closet. Gainesville humidity does damage to clothes and shoes over time.
A headboard for rail-mount setup. UF beds are adjustable Twin XL. The frame can be raised or lofted, and a wall-leaning headboard won't hold once the height changes. A rail-mount headboard works at any height. University Headboards is compatible with UF halls confirmed on our list. Check at universityheadboards.com/pages/check-your-school.
Shower shoes. Required for community bathroom halls like Broward, Jennings, and the Tolbert area halls.
A power strip with USB. Outlets are limited in older halls especially.
Orange and blue, but pick a few items. UF pride decor is everywhere on campus. Your room doesn't need to be a Gator showroom. One flag, one poster, one piece of decor.
Bug spray. Gainesville in August has mosquitoes. The walk back to your dorm from the dining hall after dark can be brutal.
UF stages move-in by hall and assigned time. Your specific time slot is in your move-in packet. Show up at the assigned time, not earlier.
Bring water and snacks for the move. Gainesville heat is real.
Dining halls are open day one. Gator Corner and Broward Dining are the main options for most freshman halls.
The Target in Butler Plaza on Archer Road is the main move-in supply hub. The Walmart on Newberry Road is another option. Both are 10-15 minutes from campus.
If you're flying in, Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV) is small but functional, about 15 minutes from campus. Orlando (MCO) is about 2 hours south. Jacksonville (JAX) is about 90 minutes east.
If you're driving from out of state, Gainesville is in north-central Florida. I-75 is the main route from Atlanta and points north.
Function over decor. A strong fan for Gainesville humidity, a good mattress topper, real pillows, and a headboard that works with adjustable Twin XL frames. Then add personality with one or two pieces that matter to you.
Find your specific hall on the UF Housing site for any room-specific variations.
For a headboard that fits UF's adjustable Twin XL frames, check out University Headboards. Compatible with confirmed UF halls. Slides on in seconds, no tools, no wall damage. universityheadboards.com.
