LSU freshmen who live on campus end up in one of several residence hall clusters: the Pentagon (the historic four-hall freshman complex), Herget, Acadian, Edward Gay, Miller, Spruce, West Laville, and the newer Residential Colleges. The setup varies significantly between the older Pentagon halls and the newer construction.
This is the practical guide before you start packing for Baton Rouge.
LSU's Residential Life confirms on their site that most residence hall beds are Twin XL (38" x 80"), though they recommend checking the specific building page because "some buildings have different mattress sizes."
The standard furniture includes:
Beds in most LSU halls can be raised and lofted, similar to other major SEC schools.
LSU does not provide pillows, sheets, or any soft goods.
The Pentagon (Stuart Hall, Lejeune Hall, Pleasant Hall, Pinetum Pentagon). The historic four-hall freshman complex. Smaller rooms but classic LSU. Twin XL beds.
Highland Hall, West Hall, Annie Boyd, Evangeline, East Laville. Mix of freshmen and upperclassmen housing. Twin XL beds with loftable frames in most rooms.
Acadian Hall. Newer, freshman-friendly. Twin XL beds.
Herget Hall. Suite-style, with mostly upperclassmen but some freshmen. Twin XL beds.
The Residential Colleges (Roger Hadfield Ogden, Engineering, Business). Newer construction. Twin XL beds. Modern bathrooms and amenities.
West Laville, Miller, Spruce. Smaller, traditional halls. Twin XL beds in most.
LSU's recommendation: check your specific hall's page on the LSU Housing site before buying bedding. They flag that some buildings have different mattress sizes than the standard Twin XL.
Standard dorm checklist plus:
Twin XL bedding (verify on your building's page first). LSU's site specifically calls this out as something to confirm before buying.
A mattress topper. LSU mattresses are firm and older in the Pentagon halls especially.
A fan, a strong one. Baton Rouge in August is genuinely brutal. Even with AC, the humidity is a different level than other SEC schools. A floor fan that moves real air, not just a desk fan.
A dehumidifier or moisture absorber pack. Baton Rouge humidity is no joke. Closet moisture can become a problem.
A headboard for rail-mount setup. LSU beds across most halls are loftable Twin XL. A wall-leaning headboard won't survive the year if you adjust the loft. A rail-mount headboard works at any height. University Headboards is compatible with most LSU halls. Check at universityheadboards.com/pages/check-your-school.
Shower shoes. Required for traditional Pentagon halls with community bathrooms.
A power strip with USB. Outlets are limited in the older Pentagon halls.
Purple and gold, but minimal. One flag, one pillow, one wall piece. The dining halls and student union are already full Tiger so your room doesn't need to be.
LSU staggers move-in by hall and date. Your specific time slot matters, showing up earlier doesn't help because residential staff process you in scheduled blocks.
Bring water for the move. Baton Rouge in August can hit 95 with high humidity. The walk from parking to the room will leave you sweating.
Dining halls are open day one. Take advantage.
The Target in Baton Rouge on Coursey Boulevard is the main move-in supply hub. There's also a Target Express closer to campus on Highland Road. The Walmart on Burbank is another option.
If you're flying in, Baton Rouge Airport (BTR) is about 15 minutes from campus. New Orleans (MSY) is about 90 minutes east.
If you're driving from out of state, plan for Baton Rouge traffic during peak move-in week. I-10 backs up.
Three things based on student feedback: a good fan that moves real air (this is Baton Rouge), a comfortable bed setup including a topper and real pillows, and a headboard that fits the lofted Twin XL frames. Decor matters less than function in LSU's heat.
Verify your specific hall's mattress dimensions on the LSU Housing site. They explicitly recommend checking this before buying bedding.
For a headboard that works with LSU's lofted Twin XL frames, check out University Headboards. Compatible with most LSU halls. Slides on in seconds, no tools, no wall damage. universityheadboards.com.
