Alabama Dorm Room Setup: A 2026 Guide for Incoming Freshmen

The University of Alabama has more residence halls than most schools its size, and they vary more than students realize. Tutwiler is not Lakeside. Lakeside is not Ridgecrest. Knowing which hall you're in, and what specifically comes with that hall, saves a lot of guesswork before move-in.

This is the practical version of the housing site, with the parts that actually affect your daily life.

What your hall determines

The big things that vary by hall at UA:

  • Bed dimensions and adjustability
  • Room size and layout
  • Suite vs community bathroom
  • Whether you have a kitchenette in your suite
  • Whether the closet has a door

Most halls fall into one of two patterns. Suite-style (kitchenette, attached or shared bathroom, more space) or traditional (community bathroom, no kitchenette, smaller rooms but better community).

Hall-by-hall reference

All data below comes from UA's Housing and Residential Communities site, current as of 2026.

Lakeside (East, North, South). Suite-style, 4-bedroom suites with kitchenette and shared bathrooms. Extended twin (Twin XL) bed and mattress at 36"W x 80"L. Adjustable height up to 33" max from floor. Bed rails available. Approximate room dimensions: 10' x 10'.

Ridgecrest East and West. Suite-style, 4-bedroom suites. Same Twin XL bed (36"W x 80"L), adjustable up to 33" max. Bed rails available. Approximate room dimensions: 11' x 10'.

Ridgecrest South. Honors housing. 2 or 4-bedroom suites with kitchenette and bathrooms. Twin XL bed (36"W x 80"L), adjustable up to 50" max from floor (higher loft option than most halls). Bed rails available.

Presidential Village 1 and 2. Suite-style. Twin XL bed (36"W x 80"L), adjustable up to 50" max from floor. Approximately 13' x 9' bedrooms. Restricted decor rules: nails or push pins only (max 10), no peel-and-stick wallpaper, no LED light strips, no mounted TVs.

Riverside (multiple buildings). Suite-style with 1, 2, or 4-bedroom layouts. Twin XL bed (36"W x 80"L), adjustable up to 33" max from floor. Approximately 11' x 10' bedrooms. Closets without doors (curtain panels permitted).

Julia Tutwiler Hall. Traditional community bathroom hall. Twin XL bed and mattress (36"W x 80"L), permanent height at 22" from floor. Tutwiler beds do not adjust. Approximately 12' x 12'3" rooms.

Parham East. Traditional. Standard twin (36"W x 75"L), not Twin XL. Adjustable up to 33" max. This is the one outlier among major UA halls, bedding has to be regular twin, not Twin XL.

What this means for what you buy

UA students need to verify three things based on the hall list above:

Mattress size. Almost every UA hall is Twin XL. The exception is Parham East (standard twin, 75"). If you're in Parham East, buy twin sheets, not Twin XL.

Bed adjustability. Most halls adjust up to 33". Ridgecrest South and Presidential Village adjust up to 50" (true loft height). Tutwiler doesn't adjust at all (permanent 22"). This matters for under-bed storage and for whether a wall-leaning headboard is even an option.

Wall restrictions. Presidential Village specifically prohibits LED light strips, peel-and-stick wallpaper, and TV mounts. Push pins or small nails only. Check your specific hall's contract for similar restrictions before buying decor.

What to bring (UA-specific)

Standard dorm checklist applies, plus these UA-specific notes:

A fan. Tuscaloosa in August is hot and humid. Even with AC, air doesn't circulate well in older halls. Floor fan or clip-on works.

Twin XL bedding (or standard twin if you're at Parham East). Most schools assume Twin XL across the board. UA's outliers make this a verification step.

A headboard that works with adjustable rails. If you're in Lakeside, Ridgecrest, Riverside, or any of the adjustable-height halls, your bed will likely get raised at some point. Wall-mounted or leaning headboards fall over when the bed gets adjusted. A rail-mount headboard moves with the bed. We make one specifically for this. Compatible with every UA hall except Parham East (because of the size difference). Check at universityheadboards.com/pages/check-your-school.

A surge protector with USB. Tutwiler especially is an older hall and outlets are limited.

Shower shoes. Required for Tutwiler (community bathrooms). Recommended even in suite-style halls.

Crimson but not crimson everything. Have one or two pieces of UA pride decor. Going full crimson and white is something students walk back by October. Pick one big poster, one flag, and leave the rest of your decor more personal.

Move-in at UA

UA assigns specific move-in routes by hall, same as UGA. Your route is in the move-in packet. The routes manage Tuscaloosa traffic during the busiest week of the year. Following them isn't optional in the sense that staff direct you, and showing up off-route gets you redirected anyway.

The dining halls are open day one. Lakeside Dining is convenient if you're in any of the western halls. The Student Center has options too.

Bed height adjustment requests at UA go through the myHousing portal. Submit before move-in if you know what you want.

Tuscaloosa logistics

The Target on McFarland Boulevard is the move-in supply hub. So is the Walmart on Skyland Boulevard. Both run out of basic dorm supplies by the morning of move-in, so going the night before is the move if you're driving down a day early.

If you're flying in, BHM (Birmingham) is about an hour drive. Tuscaloosa Airport is closer but has limited flights.

The hardest part of UA move-in is the parking situation around Bryant-Denny. If your hall is in that area (Tutwiler is one of the closest to the stadium), allow extra time on football game weekends, but move-in is usually before the season starts.

Quick answer: what makes a UA dorm room actually feel like home?

Practical things: a good mattress topper (UA mattresses are firm and old), real pillows, a headboard that works with whatever bed setup your hall has, and one or two personal items that aren't dorm-store-generic. The rooms are smaller than the photos suggest. Pick decor that adds personality without adding clutter.

What to do next

Verify your hall's specs on the UA housing site, especially bed dimensions if you might be in Parham East. Submit your bed height change request through myHousing if you want a different height than the default.
